Who am I
Hermit — born 19 March 1976, Eastern Highlands, Zimbabwe
He is a self-taught artist who nurtured what started off as an early childhood hobby into a career. Growing up in Mutare, when the opportunity came he exhibited at competitions, the Mutare Museum and the Annual Agricultural Show. Gaining confidence from his victories, he committed more time to developing his passion — notable because art was neither taught at the schools he attended nor common among his peers.
Following primary and secondary education, Hermit pursued automotive engineering and worked in that field from 1994–2000, then in procurement and management from 2000–2007. Secure employment was the norm, but he always felt a void — none of those paths satisfied the creative calling.
In 2008 he threw caution to the wind, left secure employment and went into art full-time. He started showcasing work in 2009, has taken part in several group exhibitions and hosted 3 solo exhibitions in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Popularity has grown steadily, with works collected within Zimbabwe, across the African region and as far as Europe.
What inspires the work
Love for people — their expressions, traditions, cultures — and nature. Drawn to auras of happiness, peace and light, Hermit paints to connect visually and emotionally: realism with a touch of creative exploration.
Media of choice are pencil, charcoal, pastel chalk and oil paints. Today Hermit works from his studio at The Creative Hub, No. 1 Dungarvan West Road, Borrowdale, Harare, where he also conducts art lessons.
